Our Story
On March 6, 2006, Bonnie J. Addario awoke to the news that Dana Reeve had passed away. In the words of Robin Williams, “A bright light has gone out.”
Bonnie, now a five-year accidental survivor, got dressed, went straight to the attorney and signed the papers for a new non-profit: the Bonnie Addario Lung Cancer Foundation. Enough was enough! During her recovery she discovered so little was being done for Lung Cancer…mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, husbands, wives, partners, friends and strangers were dying and ARE dying way before their time because Lung Cancer is the most underfunded and ignored cancer—unjustly stigmatized… and the real tragedy is that… it doesn’t have to be this way.
Your $20 dollars can join forces with a million others to at least bring Lung Cancer into the same playing field with all other cancers. We have the technology, the science, the brilliant minds, the passion, and the sticktoitiveness to make a difference. And now, we have YOU!
Little known facts about Lung Cancer:
* Lung Cancer surpassed breast cancer as the #1 cancer killer of women in 1987.
* Sixty percent (60%) of those diagnosed are former or NEVER smokers.
* Over 450 people die a day in the U.S. of Lung Cancer – that’s 19 an hour.
* Lung Cancer kills more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, melanoma and kidney cancers combined.
* The underfunding of Lung Cancer research has kept its overall 5-year survival rate as low as it was in 1971… 15.5%.
* In 2007, an estimated 1.5 million new worldwide Lung Cancer cases were expected with a projected 1.35 million deaths.
